THE SYRIAN HEALTH SECTOR:
a promising step towards future investing projects
In 2008, the Syrian government dedicated close to SP 40 billion (USD 850 million) for serving the health and medical sectors in Syria. Each year there is an increase covering 10-15%. Recent statistics indicates that the annual medical expenditure for a Syrian citizen has been raised from USD 60 in 2003 to USD 85 in 2007. This is 4.5% of GDP.
In the middle of 2008, there were 469 hospitals in Syria: 114 public hospitals and 355 private ones in addition to 1770 health centers. This development came as a result for applying the rules of the Investment Law No. / 8 /. In this regard, the Syrian Investment Board has exempted/supported more than 25 investing medical projects. These projects included setting up hospitals and drug factories in addition to offering medical supplies with the cost of SP 4 billion ( USD 85 million ). There are further requests and chances for performing huge medical projects and centers.
In a parallel manner and according to its annual balance sheet, the Syrian Ministry of Health works on replacing the current medical equipment in 82 hospitals. The equipment includes (CT-Scan, MRI, …etc.), medical, first-aid supplies and furniture.
Nowadays, the Syrian Ministry of Health negotiates with the European Investment Bank to obtain fund for founding 22 new medical projects in 2009 and 2010 with cost covering USD 300 millions.
This sum will be distributed as follows:
-A Pediatric Hospital in Rakka (120 beds).
-A Pediatric Hospital in Hassakah (60 beds).
-A Pediatric Hospital in Tartous (60 beds).
-A Pediatric Hospital in Damascus (120 beds).
-One Heart-Disease Center in Deir Elzour (160 beds).
-One Tumor Center in Homs (160 beds).
-One Tumor Center in Aleppo (160 beds).
-Added to that, there will be several new 60-bed hospitals in the Syrian countryside for serving patients; thus helping big hospitals in Syrian cities present more medical services for all citizens.
The above is according to Directorate of Planning & Int'l Cooperation.
The Syrian Ministry of health.
