More Investment for Better Health Care
The most recent statistics reflect the increasing GDP per capita expenditure on health for Syrian citizens from $ 60 per year in 2003 to $ 90 per year in 2008. With the move toward the eleventh five-year plan for socials and in line with the principles of social market economy, the Syrian government intends to increase investment in social sectors, especially education and health. Accordingly, investment appropriations for the Ministry of Health will increase by 10 % in 2010 compared to 2009.
The Number of hospitals in Syria in mid-2009 is 489 hospitals, 119 of which are public hospitals with 87 affiliated to MOH. There are also 370 private hospitals. The total number of hospital beds is 30702.
The Ministry of Health is completing the installation of equipment for the two 200 bed hospitals that started experimental operation, Marra Hospital in Idleb and Al Rastan Hospital.
27 general hospitals of different capacities are under construction in most governorates along with 14 specialized hospitals in the following governorates:
Damascus - Aleppo - Latakia - Tartous - Homs - Deir ez Zor - Raqqa.
In addition, MOH is restoring and/or rehabilitating and equipping 4 more hospitals, Ibn al-Nafis in Damascus, Yabrud Hospital in Rural Damascus, the National Hospital in Homs and the National Hospital in Hasakeh
Last and not least, MOH is currently negotiating the European Investment Bank (EIB) to finance, between 2010 and 2012, more than 20 health projects with a total cost of around $ 300 millions. Among these projects are:
